
What Your Balance Can Tell You About Your Health | Chiropractor - O'Fallon, MO
When was the last time you thought about your balance? For most people, the answer is probably not recently.
Balance is one of those abilities we tend to take for granted. You step over a curb, walk across an uneven yard, get dressed while standing on one leg, turn quickly when someone calls your name, or catch yourself after an awkward step without giving much thought to everything your body just accomplished.
Until, of course, those things start feeling harder.
Maybe you feel less steady than you used to. Maybe you avoid certain movements because you don't quite trust yourself. Or perhaps your balance seems perfectly fine, but you've never considered what has to happen inside your body every second to keep you upright.
Balance is much more complex than simply being able to stand on one foot.
It relies on a constant conversation between your brain and several different systems throughout your body. And while changes in balance don't automatically mean something is wrong, they can provide useful information about how your body is functioning.
Your Brain Is Constantly Figuring Out Where You Are
Even when you're standing completely still, your body isn't actually motionless. Tiny adjustments are happening continuously to keep your center of gravity where it needs to be. Your brain is receiving information, interpreting it, and coordinating muscular responses without you consciously telling it to do any of this.
Three major sources of sensory information help make that possible: your vision, your vestibular system, and proprioception. Your eyes provide information about your surroundings and your position relative to them. Your vestibular system, located within the inner ear, helps detect changes in head position and movement. And then there's proprioception, sometimes described as your body's internal sense of position.
Proprioceptors in muscles, tendons, joints, and other tissues continually provide your nervous system with information about where different parts of your body are and how they're moving.
The National Institute on Aging explains that balance can be affected by numerous factors, including vision, hearing, reflexes, muscle strength, and other health-related changes
In other words, balance isn't coming from one place.
It's the result of multiple systems communicating and responding together.
Try This Simple Experiment
Stand somewhere safe near a sturdy surface and balance on one foot.
Pretty manageable?
Now think about what would happen if you closed your eyes. For most people, it immediately becomes more difficult. You haven't suddenly lost strength in your leg. What you've done is remove one of the major sources of information your brain was using to maintain your position. Your body now has to rely more heavily on information coming from your vestibular and proprioceptive systems.
This is one of the reasons balance is so interesting from a neurological perspective. What looks like a simple physical task is actually requiring your nervous system to collect sensory information, interpret it, and coordinate an appropriate response over and over again.
And it all happens incredibly quickly.
Proprioception: The Sense You Rarely Think About
You probably learned about five senses growing up: sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch.
But your body has additional sensory systems that are just as important to everyday function.
Proprioception is one of them.
Imagine walking through your bedroom at night. Even without looking directly at your legs, you generally know where your feet are. You don't have to watch your knee bend every time you take a step.
That's proprioception at work.
Research published through the National Library of Medicine describes proprioception as sensory information related to body and limb position and movement. This information contributes to motor control, posture, and coordinated movement.
That matters for far more than athletic performance.
Proprioception is involved when you walk down stairs, reach into a cabinet, carry groceries, play with your kids, exercise, or react when you unexpectedly step onto an uneven surface.
Your ability to move confidently depends partly on your nervous system knowing where your body is in space.
Balance Can Change for Many Reasons
If your balance isn't what it used to be, there isn't one universal explanation.
Strength matters. Mobility matters. Vision matters. The inner ear matters. Certain medications and medical conditions can affect balance. Previous injuries can influence movement and proprioception. Fatigue can even make certain balance tasks more difficult.
Age can play a role as well, although becoming older doesn't mean poor balance should simply be ignored.
The important point is that balance is multifactorial.
That's also why I don't recommend looking at a single balance test and drawing a major conclusion about your health. Standing on one leg for a certain number of seconds isn't a diagnosis. Instead, think of balance as another piece of information about how your body is interacting with its environment.
What Does Your Spine Have to Do With It?
This is where the conversation becomes particularly relevant in a chiropractic office.
Your spine isn't simply a stack of bones holding you upright. The joints, muscles, and surrounding tissues are also rich sources of sensory information used by your nervous system.
As you move, sensory receptors provide information related to position and motion. Your brain integrates that information with signals coming from other areas of the body.
This does not mean that every balance problem is caused by the spine or that a chiropractic adjustment is a treatment for every person experiencing balance difficulties.
It does mean that movement, joint function, proprioception, and the nervous system are closely connected, which is one reason evaluating how someone moves can tell us useful information.

How does your body move? Where is movement restricted? What does your examination show? Does what we find correlate with the rest of your clinical picture?
Those questions matter more than assuming one finding explains everything.
Previous Injuries Can Change the Conversation
Have you ever badly sprained an ankle and noticed that side didn't feel quite as trustworthy afterward?
There's a reason rehabilitation after certain injuries often includes balance and proprioceptive exercises rather than focusing exclusively on pain.
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons includes balance-oriented work as part of its foot and ankle conditioning recommendations because restoring strength, flexibility, and control can all matter after injury.
An injury may heal, but restoring confident movement can require more than simply waiting until something stops hurting.
That's another good example of why pain and function aren't always measuring the same thing. You can feel better before every aspect of movement has necessarily returned to where you want it.
Balance Matters Long Before You're “Old”
Balance conversations are often framed entirely around fall prevention in older adults. And fall prevention is incredibly important.
I don't think balance should suddenly become important at 65. Balance, coordination, strength, and body awareness are useful throughout life. For a child, those abilities are developing through climbing, running, jumping, playing, and navigating different environments. For an athlete, they're part of performance and control. For an adult, they show up in workouts, recreation, physical jobs, and ordinary everyday movement.
And as we get older, maintaining those abilities can become increasingly valuable for confidence and independence.
Balance isn't just about avoiding falls. It's part of moving well through life.
Can You Improve Your Balance?
In many cases, balance can be trained.
Strength training, appropriate balance exercises, varied movement, and activities that challenge coordination can all play a role.
The key word is appropriate.
Someone recovering from an injury, experiencing dizziness, dealing with neurological symptoms, or already having significant balance difficulties shouldn't simply start challenging themselves with increasingly difficult exercises without understanding why the problem is occurring.
New or unexplained balance problems deserve attention.
If you experience sudden loss of balance, severe dizziness, fainting, new weakness or numbness, difficulty speaking, severe headache, vision changes, chest pain, or other concerning neurological symptoms, seek appropriate medical care promptly.
Sometimes the most important thing a healthcare provider can do is recognize when something requires evaluation outside their own office.

Don't Take Good Balance for Granted
You don't need to become obsessed with how long you can stand on one foot. But I do think balance deserves more attention than most of us give it. It's one small window into a much larger picture of strength, movement, coordination, sensory processing, and nervous system function.
So continue challenging your body appropriately. Walk on different surfaces. Build strength. Move in different directions. Maintain your mobility. And don't wait until everyday movements become difficult before deciding those abilities matter.
Your body is doing an incredible amount of work just to keep you upright. It's worth taking care of the systems that help you keep moving.
